Traditions of the Arikara

the young man (Tale 75)

Family: Arikara · Role: young man · First appears: Tale 75 · The Capture of the Enemy’s Bows

In Tale 75, the young man (Tale 75) learned from the young man's brother (Tale 75) that their father was hiding in the timber. One evening, he joined his brother and the young man's father (Tale 75) in attacking the enemy camp; the three frightened the enemy into fleeing, captured their bows and several people, and caught up with them the next day, killing many.

Afterward, the three set the enemy’s bows and arrows on a high hill, with one bow in the middle and the others resting on it. The hill became known as “Enemy’s-Bows-Upon-a-High-Hill.”
