The Eddas

Helgi Hiorvard's son

Role: son of Hiorvard and Sigrlinn · First appears: Elder Edda · The Lay of Helgi Hiorvard's Son · Part 1

In the Lay of Helgi Hiorvard’s Son, Hiorvard and Sigrlinn had a tall, comely son who was taciturn and had no fixed name. Svava gave him the name Helgi and often protected him in battle. Hiorvard promised him an army if he avenged his maternal grandfather; afterwards, Helgi and Atli slew Hrodmar, and Helgi killed the Jotun Hati (father of Hrimgerd).

Helgi demanded Svava from Eylimi (father of Svava), and they were united and loved each other ardently. On a Yule-eve, his brother Hedin vowed to possess Svava, then repented, left home, and found Helgi. At Sigar’s plain, Alf (son of Hrodmar) fought Helgi, who received his death-wound. Mortally wounded, Helgi asked Svava to prepare a couch for Hedin and embrace him. Helgi and Svava were said to be born again.
