Zechariah

Family: Israel · Role: witness · First appears: Isaiah 8

In Isaiah 8, Isaiah appointed Zechariah and Uriah as faithful witnesses. He is identified there as the son of Jeberechiah, and in Zechariah 1 as the son of Berechiah and grandson of Iddo.

In the second year of Darius, God delivered messages and visions to Zechariah, including a vision of horsemen surveying the earth. God commanded him to call the people to turn back, later sent him to deliver another message, and instructed him to crown Joshua the high priest with silver and gold. Zechariah also proclaimed that the people’s fasting had not been truly devoted to God and that they were to practice true judgment, mercy, and compassion.

In Zechariah 11, God commanded Zechariah to feed the flock destined for slaughter. Zechariah cut off three shepherds in one month, broke the staff called Beauty and then the staff called Bands, received thirty pieces of silver as his price, and cast the silver to the potter at the house of God.
