Darius
Also known as: king Darius / the king · Family: Medes and Persians · Role: king · First appears: Daniel 6
Darius the Median took Belshazzar’s kingdom at about sixty-two years old. In the first year of his rule, he was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans and is identified as the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes.
During his reign, Darius preferred Daniel above the other presidents and princes and planned to set him over the whole realm. He appointed Daniel over the kingdom, but after signing a decree forbidding petitions to any god or man for thirty days, he commanded Daniel to be cast into the lions’ den. Darius was deeply distressed and sought to deliver him, then rejoiced when Daniel was taken out unharmed. He ordered Daniel’s accusers, along with their children and wives, into the den, and decreed that people throughout his kingdom should fear God, who had delivered Daniel.
