The Legends of the Jews, Volume II

Isaac

Family: Jacob's Family · Role: prophet and grandfather of Joseph · First appears: Joseph'S Coat Brought To His Father

Isaac was the father of Jacob and Esau, and the husband of Rebekah. Jacob identified himself as Isaac’s son when addressing the ruler of Egypt, while Esau was described as “a blemished issue” begotten by Isaac. In the account of Rebekah, Isaac intended to make the Philistine kingdom stumble by saying that his wife was his sister.

Isaac was the grandfather of Levi and Judah. He taught Levi the law of the priesthood and warned him to avoid unchastity; he also blessed Levi and Judah, and Judah recalled Isaac’s blessing that he would rule in Israel. Zepho invoked the God of Abraham and Isaac as his fathers’ God, and in the account of Joseph’s coat, Isaac ceased grieving when Joseph left him, because he knew Joseph lived. Isaac died at the time Joseph was released from prison. Later, God spoke of fulfilling a covenant with the patriarchs and giving their descendants the promised land.
