Pausanias' Description of Greece

Agamedes

Family: Arcadians · Role: son of Stymphelus · First appears: Book 8 · Chapter 4

In Book 8, Chapter 4, Agamedes is named as a son of Stymphelus and brother of Gortys (son of Stymphelus). By Chapter 10, he and Trophonius are said to have built the temple to Poseidon Hippius. In Book 9, Chapter 11, they make the bridal-bed for Amphitryon as he prepares to marry Alcmena.

In Book 9, Chapter 37, Erginus becomes father of Agamedes and Trophonius. During a robbery, Agamedes is trapped, and Trophonius cuts off his brother’s head “that when daylight came he might not if detected inform against him too as privy to the robbery.” At Delphi, the stone temple built by the two brothers is later reported burnt down in Book 10, Chapter 5.
