Artanus
Family: Jewish · Role: Jewish notable · First appears: Book II, Chapter 12
In Book II, Chapter 12, Artanus, the son of Ananus, was among the prominent Jews whom Ummidius Quadratus sent to Caesar, together with Jonathan and Ananus, the high priests. In Chapter 22, Artanus joined leaders opposed to Rome in repairing Jerusalem’s walls and making weapons for war. When Simon (son of Giora) ravaged the country and sought power, Artanus and the other rulers sent an army against him, forcing him and his band to withdraw to the robbers at Masada.
By Book IV, Chapter 4, Jesus (son of Gamalas), the eldest high priest next to Artanus, stood on the tower facing those around them. In Book V, Chapter 13, Artanus is identified as the son of Bamadus and as the guard to whom Simon had given a charge; the source describes him as “the most barbarous of all his guards.”
