The Wars of the Jews

Jesus (son of Gamalas)

Also known as: Jesus · Family: Jewish · Role: high priest opposing the zealots · First appears: Book IV, Chapter 3

In Book IV, Chapter 3, Jesus, son of Gamalas, was regarded as one of the best-esteemed high priests. At assemblies, he and Ananus bitterly reproached the people for their sloth; with Gorion, Symeon, and Ananus, he urged the people to punish and expel the zealots from the temple.

In Chapter 4, Jesus, the eldest of the high priests next to Artanus, stood on the tower facing the Idumeans and urged them either to abandon their attack or enter the city peacefully as judges. In Chapter 5, he joined Ananus and, though inferior to him, was superior to the rest; the Idumeans then slew them both.
