Herodotus' Histories

Hippocrates

Family: Athenian · Role: father of Peisistratos · First appears: Book 1 · §53–59

After Chilon advised Hippocrates not to have a son—or to disown one if he already had one—Hippocrates refused, and Peisistratos was born to him afterwards. The later material names Megacles and Agariste as children of Hippocrates, with another Megacles and Agariste also recorded among his descendants.

In Book 7, Hippocrates is described as succeeding to the monarchy and as the brother of Cleander, son of Pantares. Gelon and Ainesidemos served as spearmen of his guard; later, Gelon pretended to help Hippocrates’s sons Eucleides and Cleander.
