Pausanias' Description of Greece

Epopeus

Role: mythical king · First appears: Book 2 · Chapter 1

Epopeus was the son of Aloeus and the father of Marathon. After Corax died childless, Epopeus came from Thessaly and obtained the kingdom. In a conflict with the Thebans, he and Nycteus were wounded, though Epopeus won the victory. He was connected with Antiope, whose children included Zethus and Amphion, conceived by both Zeus and Epopeus.

Afterwards, Epopeus died of the wound, which had been neglected. Lamedon succeeded him as king and gave Antiope up, leaving Lycus with no need to make war. Epopeus had also erected a shrine to Athene near The Holy Gate and built a neighbouring temple to Artemis and Apollo.
