Idylls of the King

Edyrn

Also known as: Edyrn son of Nudd · Family: Yniol's kin · Role: knight; son of Nudd · First appears: The Marriage of Geraint 4

Edyrn, son of Nudd and nephew of Yniol, was once an enemy of Yniol and Enid. After being repulsed by them, he plotted to overthrow Yniol and seize Enid, and years earlier sacked their house, scattering all they had. He later opposed Geraint over the prize of beauty, but Geraint defeated him in single combat, and Edyrn answered, “Edyrn, son of Nudd!”

Geraint ordered him to seek pardon from Arthur’s court and restore the earldom to his kin or die. Edyrn rode there, and the Queen forgave him; afterward, he rejected his treacherous past and changed through repentance and discipline, with Dubric helping to bring him toward gentleness. To Enid, his cousin, he declared, “Fair and dear cousin, you that most had cause / To fear me, fear no longer, I am changed.”

Arthur tested Edyrn and admitted him to the Table Round as one of his knights, finding him among the noblest, most valorous, sane, and obedient. Edyrn became a friend to Geraint, greeting him with “My lord Geraint, I greet you with all love;” and eventually fought for Arthur in the great battle.
