Idylls of the King

Enid

Family: Yniol's household · Role: Yniol's only child and Geraint's wife · First appears: The Marriage of Geraint 1

Enid, Yniol’s only child, became Geraint’s wife after he chose her as the one maid for him. Limours was also among her suitors, but Geraint declared he would fight for her and make her his true wife if he survived. After Yniol’s earldom and stolen goods were restored, Enid rode with Geraint to court, where Guinevere welcomed her as a friend and the Prince’s bride, clothed her for the bridal ceremony, and watched Dubric marry them.

During their journey, Enid drove the three captured horses and later urged Limours to come at morn and take her from Geraint. She then broke Geraint’s command of silence to reveal Limours’s words and her own deception, and when Geraint was wounded, she removed his armour and bound the injury with her veil. At the naked hall, she refused Earl Doorm’s offer of an earldom and would neither eat nor drink while Geraint lay apparently dead; even after Earl Doorm struck her, she remained with her husband.

When Geraint confessed that he had wronged her by doubting her, he restored his trust in her, saying, “I do believe yourself against yourself, / And will henceforward rather die than doubt.” Edyrn later revealed that he had plotted against Yniol and sought to seize Enid, while Enid’s people came to call her Enid the Good.
