The Wars of the Jews

Sosius

Family: Roman · Role: commander in Syria · First appears: Book I, Chapter 17

In Book I, Chapter 17, Antony set Sosius over the affairs of Syria. Sosius sent two legions into Judea to assist Herod against Antigonus, then followed with the rest of his army; after Herod returned with reinforcements, Sosius joined him at Jerusalem with a large force of horsemen and footmen.

After five months, their forces breached Jerusalem, seized the temple, and massacred its defenders and inhabitants. Antigonus then surrendered to Sosius, who mocked him, bound him, and kept him in custody. Sosius later left Jerusalem, taking the captive Antigonus to Antony, who had him executed.
