The western warder’s daughter (Chapter 010)

Family: Vaiśālī · Role: daughter and fellow-wife of Utpalavarṇā · First appears: Chapter X

At Vaiśālī, some time after Utpalavarṇā gave birth to a son, she bore a daughter. The maid exposed the child by the western warder’s house, where the warder took her to his wife, who received her joyfully. About that time, the western warder gave his daughter to The eastern warder’s son as his wife.

Āyushmant Maudgalyāyana then revealed to her that Utpalavarṇā was her mother and that her husband was her brother: “O daughter, your fellow-wife is your mother. Your husband is your brother.” Later, after Utpalavarṇā had lived with her husband and borne a son, the maid disclosed that the husband was Utpalavarṇā’s exposed son and that the western warder’s daughter was her exposed daughter.
