The eastern warder’s son (Chapter 010)
Family: Vaiśālī · Role: son and husband of Utpalavarṇā · First appears: Chapter X
At Vaiśālī, Utpalavarṇā’s infant son was exposed at the east gate and taken in by the eastern warder and his wife. Afterwards, the warder’s son made Utpalavarṇā his concubine; with the Liććhavis’ permission, he then made her his wife. About that time, the western warder gave his daughter to him as a wife.
Āyushmant Maudgalyāyana revealed that Utpalavarṇā was the western warder’s daughter’s mother and that the two women’s husband was her brother. After Utpalavarṇā bore a son by her husband, her maid disclosed that the husband was the son exposed at the east gate, and that his fellow-wife was the daughter exposed at the west gate.
