Caesar's Commentaries

Caius Marcellus

Also known as: Marcellus · Family: Roman · Role: consul · First appears: The Gallic War, Book VIII, 48–55

In Book VIII of the Gallic War, Caius Marcellus, then consul, delivered to Pompey the two legions Caesar had sent home; they were retained in Italy. Caesar’s adversaries boasted that Marcellus and Lucius Lentulus had been appointed consuls to strip him of honour and dignity.

In Book I of the Civil War, Marcellus retracted his opinion after Lucius Lentulus rebuked him, then followed his colleague in fleeing Rome. In Book III, Marcus Bibulus was appointed commander-in-chief of the maritime department.
