Dorieus
Family: Lacedæmonian · Role: prince · First appears: Book 3 · Chapter 3
Dorieus was a son of Anaxandrides, born to his first wife after she had borne Cleomenes (son of Anaxandrides). His brothers were Leonidas and Cleombrotus. After Anaxandrides’s death, the Lacedæmonians chose Cleomenes as king by primogeniture, although they thought Dorieus the better man in council and war.
At Lacedæmon, Dorieus would not remain subject to Cleomenes, so he was sent to form a colony. When Cleomenes later died without male children, the kingdom passed to Leonidas, Dorieus’s brother on both sides. In Book 3, Chapter 16, the people of Segeste nearly annihilated Dorieus and his army.
