Caesar's Commentaries

Ptolemy

Family: Egyptian · Role: king; guarded by troops left by Aulus Gabinius · First appears: The Civil War, Book III, 1–8

In the Civil War, Book III, Ptolemy was guarded by troops that Aulus Gabinius had left in Alexandria. A few months before Caesar’s arrival, the young king had expelled his sister Cleopatra from the kingdom with help from his relations and friends, and the two were at war. Ptolemy the father’s will had named his elder son and elder daughter as heirs; meanwhile, Pothinus, the boy’s tutor, governed as regent because of Ptolemy’s youth.

Caesar ordered Ptolemy and Cleopatra to disband their armies and settle their dispute before him. In the same account, Lucius Lentulus was seized by the king’s order and put to death in prison. When events turned to Alexandria, Caesar “took care to secure the king's person.”
