serpent
Also known as: the serpent · Role: tempter · First appears: Genesis 3
In Genesis 3, the serpent was “more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.” At the garden of Eden, it tempted Eve by denying that the forbidden fruit would bring death and saying, “Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”
Afterward, God cursed the serpent, sentencing it to go upon its belly and eat dust. God also established enmity between the serpent and Eve, saying that her seed would bruise its head while it would bruise his heel.
