The Legends of the Jews, Volume II

Jannes

Family: Ethiopia · Role: general; son of Balaam · First appears: The Flight

During The Flight, after “The absence of the king,” Balaam seized the throne and Jannes and his brother Jambres were made generals. Jannes joined Balaam and Jambres in besieging the city, preventing anyone from entering or leaving.

When the city fell, Jannes fled with Balaam, Jambres, and Balaam’s eight brothers to Egypt. Later, at Pharaoh’s palace, Jannes was among the Egyptian magicians before whom Aaron’s rod became a serpent and swallowed the magicians’ rods without growing.
