Milosh Obrenbegovitch

Also known as: Milosh / Voivode Milosh · Family: Montenegrins · Role: invited stari-svat · First appears: Chapter VII · The Marriage of Maximus Tzrnoyevitch · Part 2

In Chapter VII · The Marriage of Maximus Tzrnoyevitch, Ivan Tzrnoyevitch invited Milosh Obrenbegovitch to serve as stari-svat and bring chosen heroes to the wedding. When Ivan proposed that Milosh wear Maximus Tzrnoyevitch’s bridegroom’s hat and ornaments, the svats agreed, and Milosh took Maximus’s place for the journey to Venice.

There, the elder Venetian prince presented Milosh, whom he took for Maximus, with the bride, her black steed and grey falcon. Milosh accepted them and received further gifts from the younger Venetian prince, the Doge of Venice (father of the bride), the mother of the bride and Yesdimir. After Ivan revealed the stratagem, the bride halted at Zablak and demanded that the gifts be given to Maximus. Milosh returned the bride, her steed, falcon, sabre and golden scabbard, but refused to yield the helmet, cloak and golden shirt. Maximus struck him, causing him to fall from his steed, then cleft his head asunder.
