The Sháh Námeh

Ferangís

Family: Túrán · Role: daughter of Afrásiyáb · First appears: The Story of Saiáwush · Part 4

In the Story of Saiáwush, Ferangís married Saiáwush with Gúlshaher’s consent. Afrásiyáb granted the couple sovereignty of Khoten and bestowed treasure and animals on them. After their son was born, Saiáwush set out toward Irán to escape Afrásiyáb, leaving Ferangís behind and asking her to name the child Kai-khosráu.

After Saiáwush’s death, Afrásiyáb confined Ferangís and ordered Gersíwaz to have her secretly killed. Pírán intervened, offering to keep her “with a father's care”; Afrásiyáb let him take her to Khoten, where she gave birth to Kai-khosráu. Later, when Kai-khosráu was brought to her, Ferangís urged Gíw that they must leave without delay. In the Story of Saiáwush, the three crossed the Jihún safely on horseback, despite Afrásiyáb’s efforts to stop them. Ferangís credited Pírán with saving her and Kai-khosráu from Afrásiyáb’s wrath.
