The Wars of the Jews

Cumanus

Family: Roman · Role: procurator · First appears: Book II, Chapter 12

After the death of Herod, Claudius appointed Agrippa to his uncle’s kingdom and made Cumanus procurator of the remaining Roman province, where he succeeded Alexander. At the feast of unleavened bread in Jerusalem, unrest at the temple led to a stampede in which ten thousand Jews were killed.

At Cesarea and Lydda, Ummidius Quadratus crucified those Cumanus had taken alive and beheaded eighteen Jews involved in the fighting. Quadratus then ordered Cumanus and Celer to sail to Rome to account for what had happened to Caesar (murdered ruler). There, Caesar (murdered ruler) condemned the Samaritans, banished Cumanus, and sent Celer to Jerusalem for execution.
