Caleb
Family: Judah · Role: spy · First appears: Numbers 13
Caleb, a spy of Judah and son of Jephunneh, was sent by Moses in Numbers 13 among the tribal leaders to search Canaan. After forty days, the spies returned with fruit and reported that the land flowed with milk and honey. Caleb then urged Israel, “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.”
In Numbers 14, God distinguished Caleb because he had followed Him fully, promising to bring him into the land and give it to his seed. While the other adults and the other spies were condemned to die in the wilderness, Caleb and Joshua lived; later, God exempted Caleb from judgment and promised him the land he had explored. In Numbers 34, Caleb was among those connected with God’s command to divide Canaan’s inheritance among Israel.
