Edmund son of Edward

Also known as: Edmund / Edmund Atheling / Edmund atheling / King Edmund · Role: king · First appears: A.D. 449–556

In 938, Edmund and his brother Athelstan defeated Anlaf at Brumby. In 941, Edmund succeeded Athelstan to the kingdom. He received Anlaf at baptism and later received Reginald at the bishop’s hands; under 943, he besieged Anlaf and Wulfstan at Leicester, but they escaped. Anlaf subsequently became his friend, and Edmund received him at baptism and gave him royal presents.

In 944, Edmund brought Northumbria under his dominion and expelled Anlaf and Reynold. In 945, he granted Cumberland to Malcolm (A.D. 945) on condition that Malcolm become his ally by sea and land. In 946, Leof stabbed Edmund at Pucklechurch, killing him; Ethelfleda of Damerham, daughter of Alderman Elgar, was then his queen. In 955, his son Edwy succeeded to the government of the West-Saxons, and his son Edgar son of Edmund to the government of the Mercians.
