Also known as: Anlaf Curran / Anlaf of Ireland / King Anlaf · Role: king · First appears: A.D. 921–935
In 927 and 938, Anlaf was at war with Athelstan and Edmund son of Edward at Brumby, where their forces defeated his. In 941, the Northumbrians chose him as king, and Edmund son of Edward received him at baptism—an event also recorded under 943. Anlaf was the son of Sihtric.
In 943, Anlaf stormed Tamworth, where his forces won and carried off plunder. Edmund son of Edward besieged Anlaf and Wulfstan at Leicester, but they escaped by night. Anlaf then obtained Edmund’s friendship, and Edmund gave him royal presents. Edmund later brought Northumbria under his rule and expelled Anlaf and Reynold; this is recorded under 941 and under 944.
