Denys de Morbeque
Also known as: Sir Denys · Family: England · Role: knight · First appears: Book 1, Chapter 80
In Book 1, Chapter 80, King Edward employed Denys de Morbeque in the English king’s service. When King John surrendered to him, saying, “I surrender myself to you,” English and Gascon fighters took the king from Denys and disputed who had captured him.
By Chapter 83, Denys’s claim was contested by Bernard de Trouttes, who declared an equal right to the captive. At Bordeaux, the Prince of Wales arrested both men until they could present their rival claims before the king in England. The prince also privately gave Denys two thousand nobles to support his claim to King John.
