Quintus Fufius Kalenus
Also known as: Fufius / Fufius Kalenus / Kalenus / Quintus Calenus · Family: Roman · Role: lieutenant · First appears: The Gallic War, Book VIII, 31–39
In Book VIII of the Gallic War, Caesar left Quintus Fufius Kalenus with two legions and orders to follow by regular marches, calling him “one of his lieutenants.” In Book III of the Civil War, at Brundisium, Caesar entrusted him with transporting the remaining legions and cavalry. After receiving warning that enemy ships occupied the ports and shore, Kalenus returned his fleet to harbour.
The next day, Kalenus sailed from Brundisium with Caesar’s officers, including Marcus Antonius, and reached Nymphaeum despite pursuit by the Rhodian fleet. Later, Caesar sent him to attempt the conquest of Achaia and ordered Caius Calvisius Sabinus and Lucius Cassius Longinus to join him with their cohorts.
