Seraiah

Also known as: Seraiah the son of Azriel · Family: Judah · Role: official · First appears: Jeremiah 36

Seraiah was an official of Judah. In Jeremiah 36, Jehoiakim commanded him, as Seraiah the son of Azriel, to help seize Baruch and Jeremiah, but they were hidden. In Jeremiah 40, he is named as the son of Tanhumeth.

In the fourth year of Zedekiah’s reign, Seraiah went with him to Babylon, where Jeremiah commanded him to read the prophet’s judgment against Babylon. After reading it, Seraiah bound a stone to the book and cast it into the Euphrates. He is identified there as the son of Neriah.

At Riblah, Nebuzaradan captured Seraiah, identified as the chief priest, along with Zephaniah. Nebuchadnezzar then had them put to death.
