Nebuzaradan

Family: Babylon · Role: captain of the guard · First appears: Jeremiah 39

Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard of Babylon, carried the remaining people of Jerusalem into captivity in Jeremiah 39. Under Nebuchadnezzar’s command, he took Jeremiah from the prison court and committed him to Gedaliah, so that he could dwell among the people.

In Jeremiah 40, at Ramah, Nebuzaradan released Jeremiah from his chains, saying, “And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand.” He directed Jeremiah to return to Gedaliah at Mizpah or go wherever he wished, and supplied him with provisions. In Jeremiah 52, he served Nebuchadnezzar in Jerusalem, burning the temple, palace, houses, and city walls; he then captured Seraiah and Zephaniah and brought them to Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah, where they were executed.
