The Boy's Froissart

Earl of Hainault (Tournay campaign)

Family: Hainault · Role: earl · First appears: Book 1, Chapter 27

In Book 1, Chapter 27, the Earl of Hainault and his allies failed to breach Mortagne and abandoned the siege, returning toward Tournay with his uncle Sir John while the Valenciennois went back to their town. The account also places him against the Lord of Beaujeu, as the earl and his Hainaulters arrived on one side of the town and the Valenciennois on the other.

On the morrow after their departure, in Chapter 28, the earl and Sir John entered St. Amand; the earl ordered that no quarter be given to its defenders. Afterwards, he led about six hundred men-at-arms on an excursion to burn Orchies, Landas, and Le Celle. After this, his forces captured and killed Sir Aymé, then pillaged and burned the monastery and village of Marchiennes. Chapter 30 identifies the lady of John de Valois as the earl’s mother and sister to the King of France.
