Navaho Legends

the son of Hastséhogan

Role: son of Hastséhogan · First appears: Origin Legend II: Early Events in the Fifth World · Part 3

In Origin Legend II: Early Events in the Fifth World · Part 3, Hastséhogan’s son was among the gods, who spent the night performing rites to give him powers equal to Nohoílpi’s as a gambler. In the morning they washed and dressed him to resemble his rival.

In Part 4, he wagered against Nohoílpi and, with help from Tsápani, won Nohoílpi’s wives at the game of thirteen chips. Nohoílpi gave up the nánzoz game after the hoop fell on his opponent’s pole, and the contests continued. In Part 5, the young victor won Nohoílpi’s wealth, houses, and slaves, then freed the remaining captives by winning the final ball game. He gave beads and shells to Hastséyalti for distribution among the gods, and the two great shells to Tsóhanoai. Declaring Nohoílpi his slave, he shot him into the sky with a magic bow, then returned to Tse`gíhi, the home of the yéi.
