Herodotus' Histories

Artabazos

Family: Persian · Role: commander of the Parthians and Chorasmians · First appears: Book 1 · §190–195

In Book 1, Tritantaichmes is identified as Artabazos’s son. By Book 7, Artabazos, son of Pharnakes, commanded the Parthians and Chorasmians. In Book 8, he delivered Olynthos to Critobulos of Torone and the Chalkidians; Timoxeinos had arranged to surrender the town by treachery.

At Plataia, on the eleventh day, Artabazos advised Mardonios against battle, but Mardonios rejected his advice and chose to fight the Hellenes. Artabazos was esteemed by Xerxes; he was displeased that Mardonios had remained behind after Xerxes departed. When fighting began, Artabazos led his troops away from the battle and fled toward the Hellespont.
