Tristan and Iseult

Rohalt

Also known as: Marshal Rohalt · Family: Lyonesse · Role: marshal and keeper of Tristan · First appears: Chapter 1 · Part 1

At the Castle of Kanoël, Marshal Rohalt was entrusted with Blanchefleur as her guardian and took the child Tristan into his keeping. To protect Rivalen’s heir from Morgan, he hid Tristan among his own sons: “but for fear that Morgan might slay Rivalen’s heir the Marshal hid him among his own sons.” He loved Tristan as a son, yet remembered Rivalen and revered Tristan as his lord.

When seven years had passed, Rohalt placed Tristan under the tutelage of Gorvenal. After long wandering by sea and land, he revealed Tristan at Cornwall to King Mark as the son of Blanchefleur and Rivalen: “King Mark, here is your nephew Tristan, son of your sister Blanchefleur and of King Rivalen.” Later, at Lyonesse, Tristan released his recovered land to Rohalt and his heirs, asking him to hold it and pass it to his son.
