The Wars of the Jews

Eleazar, the son of Simon

Family: Jewish · Role: leader of a zealot faction · First appears: Book V, Chapter 1

In Book II, Chapter 20, Eleazar’s money and stratagems led the people at Jerusalem to submit to his authority in public affairs. He had taken possession of prey captured from the Romans, money taken from Cestius, and much of the public treasure, though he was not ordained to the office; Simon is his parent.

By Book V, Chapter 1, Eleazar had revolted from John in pursuit of power and formed a faction with Judas the son of Chelcias, Simon the son of Ezron, and Hezekiah, the son of Chobar. Followed by many zealots, they seized the inner court of the temple, making Eleazar a leader of a zealot faction.
