The Boy's Froissart

Earl of Tancarville (Caen campaign)

Family: France · Role: earl · First appears: Book 1, Chapter 46, part 1/2

At Aiguillon, the lords advised the Duke of Normandy to send the Constable of France and the Earl of Tancarville to Paris to report on the siege and seek King Philip’s instructions. In 1346, after the English landed, King Philip ordered the Earl and Earl of Guignes to Caen to defend the town and its neighbourhood.

At Caen, the Earl and Earl of Guignes ordered that no one leave and that the bridge, gates, and river be guarded. The townsmen then marched out in formation, appearing ready to fight. When the English entered the town, the Earl was among its defenders; after the fighting, Sir Thomas Holland and his men called to the defenders and asked if they would surrender as prisoners.
