Plutarch's Lives

Cinna

Family: Roman · Role: consul · First appears: Caius Marius

Cinna was a Roman consul who first joyfully received Caius Marius’s offer, naming him proconsul and sending him the fasces and other ensigns of authority. He and Octavius became enemies when their factional opposition turned to fighting, and Octavius drove Cinna out of the city; Cinna then joined himself and his forces with Caius Marius. Quintus Sertorius joined Cinna’s party.

When Cinna and Caius Marius held power, they killed Marcus Crassus’s father and brother, while Marcus Crassus escaped to Spain. Lucius Terentius was Cinna’s companion and comrade, having been corrupted by him. Cinna was the father of Cornelia, Caesar’s wife, and was also described in connection with Caesar and Marcus Brutus, including as a friend of Caesar.
