The New Testament

Lazarus

Family: Bethany · Role: brother of Mary and Martha · First appears: John 11

Lazarus of Bethany is the brother of Mary of Bethany and Martha. In John 11, he had been dead and lain in the grave for four days when Jesus came to Bethany and raised him. Lazarus came out bound in graveclothes, and Jesus commanded, “Loose him, and let him go.” Jesus called him a friend and loved Lazarus, Mary of Bethany, and Martha.

Six days before the passover, Lazarus was at Bethany with Jesus, having been raised from the dead. He sat at the table with Jesus while Martha served, and the chief priests formed a plot to kill Lazarus because many Jews believed in Jesus because of him.
