Ainnle

Also known as: Aindle · Family: Ulstermen · Role: son of Usnach · First appears: The Exile of the Sons of Usnach · Book of Leinster Version · Part 1

Ainnle, also called Aindle, was one of the sons of Usnach, born to Ailbhe and reared by Aife. Scathach, Bohvan and Conall Cernach taught him skills, and he shared the exile with his brothers Naisi and Ardan. In the Book of Leinster account, the brothers left Ulster with Deirdre and their company, took refuge with the king of Alba, and later fled to an island after learning of a plan to destroy them.

In Part 2, Ainnle and his brothers agreed to return to Erin with Fergus mac Rog as their surety. As they continued toward Emain, Conor’s scheme delayed Fergus, and Conor and Eogan’s warriors were ordered to kill the sons of Usnach before they reached the king. The slaughter in the meadow left none alive who escaped the weapons.
