Henrietta Stuart
Also known as: Henrietta / Lady Henrietta / Lady Henrietta Stuart / Princess Henrietta / Princess Henrietta Stuart / the princess · Family: English royal family · Role: princess · First appears: Chapter 34
At St. James’s in chapter 34, Charles II arranged for D’Artagnan to be introduced to his sister Henrietta through Duke of Buckingham. In chapter 35, she is identified as the daughter of Charles I, granddaughter of Henry IV, and sister of Charles II. D’Artagnan was presented to her because he had helped Charles II recover his kingdom, and Henrietta allowed him to kiss her hand “with a right royal grace.” She was also courted by Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, who was in love with her, while Wilmot, Lord Rochester and Buckingham competed to make her smile; Parry, who had long served her family, pleased her by appearing before her.
In chapter 41, Athos formally offered Henrietta’s hand to Philip, Duc d’Anjou, the king’s brother. By chapter 53, Louis XIV had sent his consent for the marriage, and Charles II was to send Henrietta’s consent to London.
