Alexandra
Family: Judean royal · Role: queen and ruler · First appears: Book I, Chapter 5
In Book I, Chapter 5, Alexander left the kingdom to Alexandra, his wife, and she assumed dominion over it: “Now Alexander left the kingdom to Alexandra his wife.” She made their elder son, Hyrcanus, high priest on account of his age, while retaining their younger son, Aristobulus, with her as a private person because of his warm temper. During her rule, the Pharisees became the real administrators of public affairs, and she sent an army against Damascus on the pretense that Ptolemy was oppressing the city, taking possession of it without considerable resistance.
Alexandra died after reigning nine years, before she could punish Aristobulus. Later, at Ascalon in Book I, Chapter 9, Philippio married Alexandra, but was killed by his father, Ptolemy, who had first slain his own son and then married Alexandra.
