Madrī

Role: wife of Viśvaṇtara · First appears: Chapter XVI

In Chapter XVI, Madrī resolved to accompany Viśvaṇtara into the penance-forest, saying, “O lord, if this be so, I too will go into the penance-forest.” She left the city with him and their children, Prince Kṛishṇa and Princess Jālinī.

At the hermitage, Viśvaṇtara told her he had given their children to a Brahman, then gave Madrī to a Brahman who had requested her. Afterward, Śakra revealed himself to Madrī, returned her to Viśvaṇtara, and instructed him not to give her away again.
