The Five Books of Moses

Aholiab

Family: Dan · Role: craftsman · First appears: Exodus 31

In Exodus 31, God appointed Aholiab of the tribe of Dan alongside Bezaleel for the work he had commanded, identifying him as “the son of Ahisamach.” In Exodus 35, God enabled Aholiab and Bezaleel both to teach and to perform skilled work.

In Exodus 36, Aholiab worked with Bezaleel and the skilled workers on the sanctuary, receiving wisdom and understanding for its construction. Moses summoned them to the work, and Aholiab and Bezaleel received the offerings brought by Israel. Together with Bezaleel, Aholiab was associated with the tabernacle’s curtains, boards, veil, and door hanging.

By Exodus 38, Aholiab’s role was described as that of “an engraver, and a cunning workman, and an embroiderer in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and fine linen,” working with Bezaleel in the holy place.
