Pausanias' Description of Greece

Preugenes

Family: Achaia · Role: father of Patreus · First appears: Book 3 · Chapter 2

Preugenes and his son Patreus were allowed by the Achæans to build Patræ in their territory; the city was named after Patreus. He was also described as Patreus’s father and as a grandson of Agenor.

While the Dorians were in possession of Lacedæmon and Argos, Preugenes took the statue of Artemis Limnatis from Sparta in obedience to a dream. At Patræ, he was honored with annual funereal rites at his tomb, like Patreus. A gate there bore golden effigies of Preugenes, Patreus, and Atherion, described as companions and contemporaries.
