The Boy's Froissart

Sir Hugh de Bastefol

Family: France · Role: governor · First appears: Book 1, Chapter 37

In 1345 at Monsegur, Sir Hugh de Bastefol was its governor when Sir Walter Manny came to him. Hugh explained that the town had sworn fealty to King Philip and said, “you ought not to be surprised if we shut our gates against you”. Monsegur sought a month without hostilities while awaiting intervention by King Philip or Duke of Normandy (son of King Philip); if neither arrived, it would submit to the King of England.

In Book 1, Chapter 38, Hugh served under the Earl of Derby with the men of Monsegur, receiving a salary for himself and his fellow soldiers.
