The Danish History, Books I–IX

Swipdag

Family: Norwegians · Role: king · First appears: Book One · Part 4

In Book One · Part 4, while Swipdag was master of Denmark, Brage sent Guthorm and Hadding to Sweden in the care of Wagnhofde and Hafle. Swipdag then destroyed Gram in battle, who had been trying to avenge the outrage against his sister and the attempt on his daughter’s chastity.

In Book One · Part 5, after slaying Gram, Swipdag gained the realms of Denmark and Sweden. At his wife’s urging, he recalled her brother Guthorm from banishment, and, in return for promised tribute, made him ruler of the Danes. Hadding chose to avenge his father rather than accept a boon from Swipdag; in Book One · Part 6, Swipdag met him with a great fleet off Gottland, but Hadding attacked and destroyed him. In Book One · Part 7, Swipdag’s son Asmund fought Hadding to avenge his father.
