Nyagrodhaja (Kāśyapa)
Also known as: Kāśyapa / Nyagrodhaja · Role: son of Nyagrodha · First appears: Chapter IX
After the god’s son entered the womb of Nyagrodha’s wife, she gave birth to Nyagrodhaja, also called Kāśyapa, at Nyagrodhika. When he had grown up and learned Brahman teachings, Nyagrodha entrusted him with instructing five hundred Brahmans’ sons. Though Nyagrodhaja wished to enter the forest of penitence, his father arranged his marriage, and Kapilabhadrā’s parents betrothed her to him.
At Kapila, Nyagrodhaja and Kapilabhadrā agreed to honor their vow to live without amorous relations. After they married, they reminded one another of that vow and “lived together like a mother and a son” in his parents’ home. Nyagrodhaja later divided his property and left home with Kapilabhadrā to pursue ascetic life. At Rājagṛiha, he urged her toward the Buddha’s teaching and sent her to Mahāprajāpatī, who received her.
