Nyagrodha

Role: Brahman · First appears: Chapter IX

Nyagrodha was born at Nyagrodhika after his father prayed to the Nyagrodha tree for a child. He later married a woman of similar birth, but they remained childless until Nyagrodhaja (Kāśyapa) was conceived and born after the god’s son entered his wife’s womb.

When Nyagrodhaja had grown up and learned Brahman teachings, Nyagrodha entrusted him with teaching five hundred Brahmans’ sons. Although his son wished to enter the forest of penitence, Nyagrodha arranged for him to marry, saying, “a wife must be taken for the maintenance of the race.” After Nyagrodha and his wife had lived on for some time, they died.
