Menoetius

Family: Titans · Role: father of Patroclus · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.2

🌐 Also appears in: The Iliad (as Menoetius)

Menoetius is a Titan and the father of Patroclus. In Apollodorus, Zeus struck him with a thunderbolt during the battle with the Titans and hurled him down to Tartarus: “Menoetius, he whom Zeus in the battle with the Titans smote with a thunderbolt and hurled down to Tartarus.”

Hesiod names Iapetus and Clymene as his parents, and describes him as the sibling of Atlas, Prometheus, and Epimetheus; Apollodorus instead gives Iapetus and Asia as his parents and also calls him the son of Actor. Hesiod later says that Zeus struck Menoetius with lightning and sent him to Erebus because of his pride: “But Menoetius was outrageous, and far-seeing Zeus struck him with a lurid thunderbolt and sent him down to Erebus because of his mad presumption and exceeding pride.” Patroclus was born to Menoetius and Sthenele.
