Hero Tales and Legends of the Serbians

Yelitza

Role: sister · First appears: Chapter XIII · The Stepsisters

In Chapter XIII · The Stepsisters, Yelitza is the sister of Paul and Radool. When Paul's youthful wife mortally wounded Paul’s steed in the meadow and accused Yelitza of stabbing it, Yelitza swore she had not, and Paul believed her. At evening, his wife killed his falcon and made the same accusation; Yelitza again denied it, and Paul still believed her. Jealous of the gifts the brothers gave Yelitza, Paul’s wife asked Radool's wife for a plant to destroy their sister, but she refused.

At evening meal-time, Paul’s wife stole the golden knife the brothers had given Yelitza, killed her own infant with it, and accused Yelitza of stabbing the child. Paul seized Yelitza, bound her to four horses, and drove them across the desert, killing her. Flowers sprang where her blood fell, and a church arose where her body fell.
